The BTE Senior Underwriter (SUW) will undertake assessment and underwriting of complex risks in line with the prescribed appetite. In doing so, the SUW will liaise with key stakeholders such as senior underwriting managers, our underwriters and ARAG in Germany. The nature of the role will require the SUW to develop and manage relationships with multiple stakeholders including but not limited to internal colleagues and business partners.

In addition, as a primary contact for technical and escalated queries from within the function and from other departments, the BTE Senior Underwriter supports the wider BTE Underwriting team, and other business units, by providing technical guidance and coaching on both a proactive and reactive basis.

Your tasks

  • External Customer Service:
In conjunction with the input of senior underwriting managers, the BTE sales function and other internal stakeholders, implement and maintain function improvements that ensure we deliver market leading customer service. This will include assuming technical account ownership for key customers and/or visiting customers as necessary to discuss their underwriting experiences and needs.
  • Internal Customer Service:
Deal with technical & escalated underwriting queries primarily from within the BTE underwriting function but sometimes from other stakeholders, ensuring both satisfactory resolution and the development of BTE team members’ ability to handle similar issues in the future.
  • Work Flow Management:
Plan, prioritise & monitor own work to meet company service, quality and profit standards.
  • Underwriting Processing:
Implement the improvement of the business processes associated with the BTE underwriting function. Ultimately ensure that processes, including the assessment of new propositions, declarations, policy/scheme setups and scheme reviews, are completed in an accurate and timely manner whilst fulfilling the risk appetite guidance as set by senior management.
  • Communication:
Work effectively with all stakeholders (inc. brokers, solicitors & underwriters). Negotiate terms, exclusions, cover scope & premium rates as required.
  • Learning & Development
Support senior Underwriting Managers in the identification of the L&D needs of the BTE team. Work to fulfill those needs in an appropriate and effective manner.
  • Compliance and Quality Assurance:
Support senior Underwriting Managers in carrying out BTE technical activities in line with stipulated processes, procedures and authority limits, providing coaching and training where necessary to the team. Monitor the performance of external service providers (e.g. solicitors, agents) to ensure their adherence to company standards & contribution towards profit.
