The BI Engineer is a multifaceted role that includes the development, operation, maintenance and user adoption of BI products and services to support the business intelligence vision. Development may be across any of the assets and processes in the BI supply chain, to include end user reports, corporate data sets, data warehousing and operational data stores, data flows and transformations, data preparation and extraction, and master data management. Operations will include undertaking and monitoring of scheduled tasks and responding to user issues. Maintenance will include refactoring assets when “broken” or to sustain business value. User adoption requires interacting with users to understand requirements and promote business adoption of BI Products.

Your tasks

  • Development of BI Products and Services:
    develop, test and release channel 1,2 and 3 BI assets and products in accordance with current BI standards. Development could be individual (C1) or team based (C3) and work could focus on specified parts of the solution based on expertise and business requirements.
  • BI Operations:
    undertake as required daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly tasks that relate to the ongoing delivery of our BI products and services. This would include the monitoring of automated services and dealing with user issues.
  • Maintenance of Assets:
    assist in maintaining the health and value of our BI assets. This includes scheduled asset management and troubleshooting to deal with unexpected issues.
  • User Requirements:
    understand how our BI products and services can benefit the business and our users. Work with the business users to convert their requirements into actionable solutions. This can include working with external business partners.
  • User Adoption:
    assist the business/users in realising the full benefits of our BI products and services. This can include working with external business partners.
  • Self-management:

    BI fulfilment requires appropriate levels of self-management in individual and team projects.
  • Learning & Development:

    take responsibility for own learning needs & objectives. Work closely with colleagues to progress knowledge & skills base.

Your profile

Minimum Education & Experience
Essential Desirable
Graduate or equivalent by experience in a relevant subject/discipline.

Circa 3 years or more relevant experience working in a data discipline.

Proven experience driving and developing technical DWH/ Data Sets.

Technical skills to include at least 2 off the following, SQL, SSIS, SSRS, OLAP, SSAS, DAX, MDX.

Experience of DWH delivery standards, processes and best practices (Kimball
methodologies).

A passion for Data and Information with a strong understanding of how to use BI to
best enable Self Service BI reporting and analysis.

Strong problem solving and planning skills, with a can-do attitude to manage and mitigate risks to maintain delivery commitments.

Good communication and relationship building skills including inspiring trust and
influencing, constructively challenging points of view.

Good all round and hands on BI knowledge and skills.
Knowledge of the insurance industry and working within regulated environments.

Experience of system test approaches, methodologies and tools

A strong business acumen (including good understanding of internal and external
markets and best practice) and strong commercial and financial awareness.

Experience of agile project delivery and scrum management using Azure DEVOPS
or similar.

Experience of Power Platform (Power BI, Power Apps, Power automate).

Experience of the Azure Platform (Logic Apps, Data Factory Databricks)
