Far from ‘fixed’ - changes to Fixed Recoverable Costs continue

While most clinical negligence cases still remain outside the Fixed Recoverable Cost (FRC) regime following the broad expansion that was introduced at the start of this month, it doesn’t look like they will escape much longer. 17/10/2023

Since our business was founded in 2006, ARAG has supported many charities and community organisations, and encouraged staff to provide practical help wherever we can. In June, for example, members of the ATE team climbed Yr Wyddfa in North Wales, otherwise known as Mount Snowdon, to raise money for the charity AvMA (Action against Medical Accidents). 17/10/2023

ARAG SE acquires D.A.S. UK

The ARAG Group and ERGO Versicherung AG, ERGO Group’s property & casualty insurer in Germany, have signed an agreement regarding the acquisition of D.A.S. UK, ERGO’s legal protection insurance business in the United Kingdom. Since 2006, the ARAG Group runs its UK operations via ARAG plc as Managing General Agent, reporting gross written premium under management of £61 million in 2022. D.A.S. UK started business over 40 years ago and today runs a legal expenses insurance company (D.A.S. Legal Expenses Insurance Company Limited) as well as a law firm servicing legal expense claims (D.A.S. Law Limited), which are both supported by an administrative services company ( D.A.S. Services Limited). Total gross written premium of D.A.S. Legal Expenses Insurance Company Limited was £129 million in 2022. 17/07/2023
Tribunal compensation limits rise in 2023

The Employment Rights (Increase of Limits) Order 2023, which sets out the annual increases to the awards in the Employment Tribunal, has been published. The new increased limits came into force on 6 April 2023. 10/07/23

LASPO at 10

There’s an argument to say that the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders ACT 2012 (LASPO) has been good for the legal expenses sector. After all, the cuts to legal aid, law centres and almost every other source of legal support, whether brought about directly by LASPO or merely part of the same drive to reduce government spending, have left very few legal options within reach for most families and SMEs. 03/07/2023

Strong BTE growth pushes ARAG past £60 million mark

Leading legal expenses insurance and assistance provider ARAG has reported another positive result for 2022, the company’s 13th successive year in profit. During the year, the company’s overall gross written premium under management increased by 18.5% to £60.6 million (2021: £51.4 million), driven by strong growth in it’s before-the-event (BTE) legal expenses insurance and assistance business. 19/06/2023
